Its almost a month since i took the connection. First thing is it is really difficult to find somebody in bsnl who actually is aware that bsnl has launched such a service. Thanks to the local JTO who never answers phone, i had to walk up and down over a week to finally find out the BSNL central office gives the connection. Luckily the first guy i saw there was the EVDO sales guy.

He gave me an application form with detail split ups of charges. There were 2 areas. 1 for evdo under rental and then evdo service by purchasing the modem/device. I chose to take it on rental for various reasons.
1. You buy an instrument, be it a modem for broadband/evdo or a mobile, any repair that comes in the long run, you are stuck with nowhere to go. Thing is, if its under warranty, bsnl will take the repair handset and give you a fresh piece, BUT if it has exceeded the warranty period, you are lost. If you take it to the company service center they would recommend sending it through BSNL which they wouldnt do.

2. I dint know much about the service records, also who knows tomorrow service turns out to be pathetic. If i am on rental i could easily return and get my deposit back.
aah yes you have to pay Rs. 1000 security deposit and Rs.500 activation fee + 1 month rental + tax initially.

I got the instrument within 10 mins. Its a preactivated modem. You dont need to put the RUIM. One thing the billing is done wisely. All evdo modems in bsnl store is preactivated and can be taken and used anytime. The billing part works like, when you take the connection, they go to their system and mark it as this user should be charged 550rs/month fixed. Now you might be thinking wat is the difference. There is a difference. Now their billing is not linked to the usage of your modem. So in the case if you had to make a call/sms through the modem, they have no ways to track it. But wisely they have disabled that in the USB modem provided.

Speeds were pathetic initially mad.gif , I am around a km far from the tower on the 7th floor of building at that time. Adjusting the device to a position i got speeds upto 80kb/s(1mbps). When the speeds were low i called up the customer care. The ladies down there dont know anything. All they know is to say, disconnect and reconnect / bring laptop with modem to exchange to check our pc(remember guys!! not MODEM our PC rolleyes.gif ).

Days passed, now the speeds come around 500kbps – 700kbps (sometimes upto 1mbps). You cannot be very much mobile with this EVDO modem. Maybe its because its still under trial runs and might be solved when it comes out in all towers.

Watever be the case, speeds are damn good @ Rs.550(NOW 650 for new users). We wont get even 256kbps unlimited @ this speeds. 500kbps unlimited is too good @ this rate. biggrin.gif

This is my review on the evdo broadband connection, hope you guys would have something better to share…
